Behemoth Brewing Co. ‘Billion Dollar Grapefruit IPA’ | American IPA | 7.0% abv | 440ml Can
Behemoth Brewing Co. are known for putting out big flavour packed beers. Often packed with big punchy hops, and who are also not afraid to experiment with different secondary ingredients and flavours. One of their newest, special releases, Billion Dollar Grapefruit IPA is no exception. Behemoth explain; grapefruit and beer make great bedfellows. This beer uses big American grapefruity hops along with grapefruit zest to combine to make a bloody tasty IPA. And that is exactly what they have achieved.
Before I get into the review of Billion Dollar Grapefruit IPA, it is worth touching on the name of this Beer. Behemoth explain that the name is a nod to a famous American Craft Brewery that recently sold for $1b US dollars. Yes that’s right, a billion with a B. The Brewery itself has created one of the most iconic American IPAs and with the trend of ‘infused or fruited’ IPAs sweeping the States, that beer was given a few different iterations, including Habanero, Pineapple and Grapefruit. Behemoth’s Billion Dollar Grapefruit IPA is a cheeky nod to the sale of that Brewery and their Grapefruit IPA.
Now to Behemoths Beer…
Billion Dollar Grapefruit IPA pours with a brilliant Golden Orange appearance, with a big fluffy white head, that continues with great lacing.
From the moment I cracked the can and poured this Beer, the aroma filled the air with Grapefruit. Massive Grapefruit. A behemoth of Grapefruit aroma.
Lifting the glass up to my face, I am received with big notes of Grapefruit juice, Pink Grapefruit, Grapefruit pithy rind. It is amazing. There is a light malt sweetness that lends to candied rind due to the dominance of Grapefruit present.
The flavour follows through much as I expected, with more juicy Grapefruit goodness. There is a bitter resinous quality from the hops that matches the bitterness of the Grapefruit zest. The beer delivers on what is expected. This is a Grapefruit IPA! The two qualities of the Hops and the Grapefruit marry together so well in delivering a flavour packed IPA.
The finish is dry with good mouthfeel. The flavour of Grapefruit lingers.
There is enough Malt Sweetness and the abv of 7% ensures that this beer does not become too one dimensional or too bitter. The juiciness of the Beer makes it quite drinkable for its size and flavour.
I love IPAs. I love well-made IPAs. In a world where there is a lot of the same, this is a beer that stands out for me. It is a well-made IPA with excellent juicy hop flavour and balance. However, with the addition of the Grapefruit zest to compliment the Grapefruit flavours from the Hops, this Beer stands out.
Final Review: 4.25/5
