Panhead Super Charger | APA | 5.7% abv | 330ml Bottle
Panhead Custom Ales is a Craft Brewery out of Upper Hutt that offer four core beers and an ever expanding range of Custom Beers, One offs and Special Releases. Panhead started its humble beginnings in 2013 Brewing out an old Tyre factory. However in more recent times, was sold to Lion Nathan in May of 2016.
While they are now part of a growing Craft portfolio owned by one of the ‘Big Two’, Panhead continue to produce top quality, award winning Beer, that is now available in more locations around New Zealand, thanks to Lions extensive Tap and Bottled Beer locations. A win-win for consumers if you ask me.
Super Charger is arguably Panheads most popular offering, having been awarded New Zealand’s best beer at the annual SOBA Beer Awards in 2016. Super Charger is an American Pale Ale showcasing some of the most popular American Hops, Centennial, Citra and Simcoe.
Super Charger pours a crystal clear burnt orange or toffee colour, with a nice thin white head. Aromas of Grapefruit dominate – I liken this to Pink Grapefruit juice. There is some ripe Pineapple and similar tropical fruit aromas coming through. Along with a nice, light Malt sweetness.
Flavours continue with Grapefruit, along with a fresh Pineyness. There is a firm but not over done bitterness that compliments the Grapefruit and Pine, along with a dry finish. The mouthfeel is medium at best, making this a very quaffable APA. There is a nice sweet caramel Malt flavour that balances out the bitterness, while still leaning this beer towards Bitter and Hoppy.
I have to admit that Panhead Super Charger is one of my ‘go-to’ Beers over the past 4 years. I remember quite fondly arriving at Beervana in 2013 to hunt out this ‘new’ brewery that everyone was talking about. That was my first Panhead Super Charger and there has been many more since. I find it an extremely drinkable beer that packs a good punch of hoppy goodness. It is a great Summer Beer, being refreshing and its availability is ever increasing. Great as a single 500ml, but also in convenient 6pk 330ml bottles or 12pk 330ml cans!
