Epic ‘Hysteria’ | West Coast IPA | 6.9% abv | 500ml bottle
Epic’s latest release is their 3rd Beer in the Hysteria IPA range, aptly named ‘Hysteria’. This is another twist on the recipe for their hugely successful Armageddon IPA – and this one may well be just as good, if not better than Armageddon!
Hysteria has just been awarded Second place and People’s Choice at the 10th Annual West Coast IPA Challenge, held at the Malthouse in Wellington, which sees breweries across New Zealand go head to head to battle it out for the Best IPA in Aotearoa. And this bottle is super fresh, only released to the public a week ago.
The Beer pours bright and golden with a decent white head that settles out into a thin cap with good lacing. Aroma is massive Tropical Fruits, which is a result of the massive Whirlpool addition of hops Luke Nicholson has used when brewing Hysteria. Massive Tropical Fruits, with Passionfruit, Pineapple and some Grapefruit leaping out of my Spiegelau IPA Glass.
The flavour backs up the awesome Aroma, with more Tropical Fruits, with a touch of Pine letting you know this is a serious West Coast IPA. Mouthfeel is medium, with a refreshing dry finish.
Hysteria has a prickly carbonation that accentuates the Hops and a medium bitterness. The dry finish makes this Beer seriously drinkable for close to 7% abv.
Hysteria is a Beer that stays true to its roots as an American West Coast IPA, but the massive Tropical Fruit that dominates the Aroma and Flavour also lends towards the New World or NZ IPA style.
Overall, this is a fantastic Beer. One of the best new releases Epic has put out this year for sure.
