Rocky Knob ‘Snapper Head’ | Imperial IPA | 7.4% abv | 500ml bottle
Rocky Knob are a Brewery based in Mount Maunganui, Tauranga and Snapper Head is their biggest offering in their core range, an Imperial IPA that combines power house hops ‘Citra’ from the US, and ‘Nelson Sauvin’ from New Zealand.
Snapper Head pours a Golden/Orange colour with a fluffy off white head with big bubbles that settles into a nice lace cap. Initial aromas are of Tropical fruits, followed by a nice sweet Toffee Malt backbone. There is a slight candied sweetness to the aroma similar to candied Citrus Peel.
The flavour moves towards more of a Grapefruit bitterness, with good mouthfeel and a medium dry finish. The bitterness, while present is not over the top and the Beer is balanced nicely with the sweet Malt flavours. There is a sweetness that is not cloying and balances the Beer really well. This is definitely a West Coast IPA, with slight hints of Pine and Dank hops. The flavours continue with good Hops, Grapefruit and candied Peel, along with Toffee and Biscuit Malt.
This is a really enjoyable Imperial IPA that is balanced nicely, making the beer very drinkable. It does not swing too far in either direction of Hops or Malt.
I am looking forward to trying more Rocky Knob Beers in the future!
